Remah (14 x 17)
There is a certain level of intimacy that comes with the pencil in my hand – the feel of the paper, its texture,
combined with the image or person I have selected to record.  Although it may start with a specific person
or persons as a reference, eventually I move to only the piece and what I feel that will complete the work. I
usually get to a point in each drawing that I’m not quite sure how to complete it – how much of the image
should I capture, and how much should I ‘hint’ at?  What I ultimately decide is not arbitrary – I usually come
to feel that the piece is complete, and that any further work on it would be a mistake.

I try to show a level of sensitivity towards the subject and the quiet strength I feel from each.  I see a level
of dignity in all of the people I record, and perhaps that is what motivates me to capture them.
